Fashioned from Nature
A lioness surveys her domain from a granite kopje deep within the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The ancient granite kopjes - the word means “little head” in Dutch - are hundreds of millions of years old, emerging like islands cast adrift in the vastness of the Serengeti grasslands making them the perfect resting place for a pride of lions during the heat of the day.
We find ourselves forever longing to return to the starkly abstract shapes of the kopjes to explore the relationship between the lions and these ancient rock castles, each adding its own primal element to the African plain. Lions have sought out such places ever since the great beasts emerged from the forests and found the perfect refuge among the coolness of these granite sculptures.
