Life or Death

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River, Maasai Mara, Kenya.

This is the last great land migration on earth: 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and hundreds of thousands of gazelles that rotate around the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem in their endless journey in search of food and water, an area of 25,000 sq km. There is an epic feel to river crossings, the dust rising on the plains for miles around as the animals hurry to gather along the banks of the Mara River during the dry season. The grunting and bellowing of the herds of wildebeest - the braying of the zebras - is almost deafening as the animals struggle to keep their heads above water. At times they pile up in their hundreds, desperate to reach dry ground. When the river is deep and the current strong dozens of animals are washed away or trampled underfoot. Meanwhile, giant crocodiles and prides of lions lie in wait to ambush the herds.

Witnessing the great herds of wildebeest and zebras massed at a river crossing is a natural spectacle like no other. There is a sense of madness; it is a primal scene, pulsing with energy, bearing witness to the endless cycle of life and death leaving you stunned and exhausted.
