A silverback male mountain gorilla sits among his family, interpreting the subtle gestures and vocalisations that tell him what is happening in his world. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda.
Despite their size - an adult male can weigh 135 to 195 kg (300 to 430 lb) - mountain gorillas are gentle creatures that spend most of their time feeding on vegetable matter in their forest home. They construct nests in the trees where they sleep during the night and are an endangered species.
